Wednesday 8 July 7:30pm – Still Heading for Extinction – The Climate Emergency in a post Covid world
A new talk hosted by XR Godalming
Recently, we have all been going through a time of significant upheaval and re-evaluation of what matters to us as individuals, communities and nations. In this talk we will try to point the way forward – including the opportunities and challenges – for climate action and activism.
Whether you’d like a climate change 101, or are wondering whether XR is for you and how you could contribute, you’d be welcome to join us on Zoom to learn more.
For nearly 2 years, Extinction Rebellion and others such as Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough have been striving to bring attention to the climate and ecological crisis. After the April 2019 uprising the UK Parliament declared a climate emergency. The October 2019 rebellion further increased public awareness and media attention. Still the Government has done little toward making the changes which are necessary to avoid disaster.
When the Covid pandemic struck, governments around the world suddenly found they COULD make changes to protect their people. They LISTENED to the science. Now we need the same urgency and discipline to be applied to the impending climate crisis which will bring far more damage and death to the world than Covid.
Still Heading for Extinction outlines what the science is telling us – that we are still heading for the world’s 6th mass extinction – and what we can do about it.
This new talk gives an update about the current science on climate change and explores how what we have learned about ourselves and our real priorities during the Covid pandemic points us towards facing up to the climate crisis. Part of this is forcing those with power to take action.
Find out our how you can take action to make this happen.
Industrial Hemp: A Solution To Climate Change?
Thursday, June 25th 2020 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Becoming conscious of the climate crisis and its devastating consequences is only the first step. Finding solutions that will mitigate the effects of the crisis and reduce its magnitude is what comes next. Are there any solutions out there that can make a significant and lasting impact?
XR Godalming in conversation with Guy Coxall, founder of HempTank, to discover industrial hemp: its origins, rich history and potential to curb climate change.
There will be ample time for questions. We will also talk about some future actions you might want to take part in – all to promote the benefits of hemp.

This Land is our Land: Community-scale Farming and Food Security – Wednesday June 17th at 7:30pm
The UK’s food system is broken.
While Covid-19 has revealed our island nation’s vulnerability to food shortages – being heavily reliant on imported goods and labour – the average farmer’s age is 59, with new entrants facing an uphill struggle due to extortionate land prices and a lack of start-up funding.
The chemical-intensive farming techniques are killing off our living soil and biodiversity. Climate change is bringing even more uncertainty to the farming calendar.
What can we do as individuals and communities to counter these worrying trends, increase our own health and feed ourselves sustainably now and in the future?
On Wednesday 17th June, join XR Godalming in conversation with Edwin Brooks, founder of Ed’s Veg market garden in Liphook, Hampshire, and Page Dykstra, coordinator for Community Supported Agriculture UK to discover how people across the UK are using small-scale, ecologically minded farming to benefit people and planet.
There will be ample time for questions: maybe you’ll be inspired to grab a broadfork and play your part in the agroecological revolution!
You can now watch the talk online here.
